Italian road signs: categories, meanings and practice
Identify what the sign does, then apply it to the situation. Shape and colour are clues; the symbol, supplementary plates and context complete its meaning.
Warning signs
These warn of a hazard, such as a bend or pedestrian crossing. Identify the precaution needed and check whether a supplementary plate specifies distance or extent.
Regulatory signs: priority, prohibitions and obligations
These set a rule to follow. STOP and give way regulate priority; other signs prohibit an action or require a direction. Read any exceptions rather than relying on colour alone.
Information signs
These identify destinations, routes and services. Distinguish information from a prohibition: a statement can be false because it invents an obligation the sign does not express.
From the sign to the question
Compare the two signs below, then answer the questions. For restricted-traffic zones, check which vehicles and conditions the statement covers. At junctions, check signs and paths before choosing the order.
Test the concept
True or false?
A restricted traffic area is bounded by special road signs of start and end
Italian text
Una zona a traffico limitato è delimitata da appositi segnali stradali di inizio e di fine
Answer and explanation
Correct answer: TRUE
A ZTL can restrict access by schedules, vehicle categories or users and permissions. It does not coincide with a permanent ban for all, nor with a maximum number of vehicles. Read which condition is added to the definition.
True or false?
A restricted traffic zone is an area where motor vehicles are always prohibited.
Italian text
Una zona a traffico limitato è un'area sempre vietata al transito dei veicoli a motore
Answer and explanation
Correct answer: FALSE
“Always” removes the conditions that define a restricted traffic zone. Access restrictions may depend on hours, vehicle categories, users or permits. Do not judge every statement by one word; compare the entire claim with the rule.
True or false?
At a STOP sign, you need not stop if there is no transverse stop line and no approaching vehicle is visible.
Italian text
In presenza del segnale di STOP non occorre arrestarsi, se non vi è la linea trasversale di arresto e non si vedono sopraggiungere veicoli
Answer and explanation
Correct answer: FALSE
PRECEEDING requires caution and slowing down, with stopping if necessary. STOP instead requires stopping even without a painted line or vehicles in sight. On a steep and narrow road, those close to a pitch facilitate passage; pedestrians on the strips do not lose their protection.
True or false?
By coming to an intersection, one must be cautious and tolerant of those who, while not taking precedence, pass equally first.
Italian text
Giungendo ad un incrocio, bisogna essere prudenti e tolleranti nei confronti di chi, pur non avendo la precedenza, passa ugualmente per primo
Answer and explanation
Correct answer: TRUE
At the unregulated intersection, priority is usually given to those arriving from the right. Both drivers must moderate the speed. Leaving a private property requires caution; the width of the road and the horn do not assign precedence.
