Tricky conditions and negatives

A word can change the meaning. He can't decide the answer himself.

Don't skip the condition

“Only if” limits a rule. In the sentence on the belts he introduces a speed threshold: ask yourself if the obligation really depends on that threshold.

Read the whole statement

“Always” and “should not” are to be read together with action, place and conditions. Don't use tricks like "always means fake."

Check with another question

After the explanation, try a different sentence on the same concept. If you're still wrong, distinguish what you didn't know from what you read wrong.

Test the concept

Now it's your turn01 / 2
A seat belt buckle and tongue, with no person or speed shown.

True or false?

Seat belts must be fastened only if you are travelling at 30 km/h or more.

Italian text

Le cinture di sicurezza vanno agganciate solo se si circola a velocità uguale o superiore a 30 km/h

Answer and explanation

Correct answer: FALSE

“Only if” introduces a 30 km/h condition that does not exist in the general seat-belt rule. Low speed does not by itself remove the duty to wear a belt. Specific legal exemptions are a separate matter.

Now it's your turn02 / 2
An interior car door handle and mirror, without surrounding traffic shown.

True or false?

A driver who gets out of a vehicle that is parked need not check whether cyclists are approaching.

Italian text

Il conducente che scende da un veicolo in sosta non deve controllare se sopraggiungono ciclisti

Answer and explanation

Correct answer: FALSE

The statement wrongly removes the need to check. Before opening a door or getting out, the driver must make sure this will not endanger or obstruct others, including approaching cyclists. A parked vehicle does not remove that duty.
